Relief Distribution to IDPs
at: Usha Community, Agatu LGA,
Benue State
May 2026
The food and clothing relief distribution was planned for eight displaced villages in Agatu — Ogwumogbo, Akele, Ikpele, Kpokpolo, Ejima, Ogbayi, Ole‑gadakolo and Olegadapa. All eight communities had suffered severe attacks by Fulani herdsmen for the second consecutive year. The survivors from these villages fled to Usha Community in Agatu LGA, Benue State, carrying with them their grief, and not much else.
When the Lay Faithful team arrived for the distribution, the atmosphere itself bespoke of the tension caused by hardship in the land. Members of the host community, themselves struggling under the weight of hunger and economic distress, insisted that they too should share in the relief meant for the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). It is difficult, but we want our donors to understand: this was not a display of malice. It was, and still is, desperation.
This level of agony often blurs the lines between neighbour and rival in a struggle for survival. At one point, the pressure from the crowd nearly overturned the order of the entire exercise. Thankfully, the food items had already been handed over to the intended beneficiaries. But the cash support meant for the widows could not be safely distributed. Themselves weary with emotion, the team had no choice but to return the funds to the Lay Faithful account. It was determined to find another way on another day to reach the widows.
What unfolded that day was a painful reflection of the state of the nation. People who naturally stand with the displaced — and offered comfort, water, a place to rest — now find themselves competing for the same lifeline. Hunger and want has turned neighbours into contenders. Even the security personnel attached to the distribution were overwhelmed by the sheer number of villagers clamouring for food.
A return visit will be scheduled, this time with stronger security, so that the widows and other vulnerable IDPs can receive what was set aside for them. But the incident remains a sobering reminder of how deeply the hardship in the land has eroded the humanity of many. When survival becomes a daily battle, compassion becomes a luxury fewer people can afford.
May the Lord shorten these days of indignation before the hearts of men grow too cold for sympathy. The desperation we witnessed is a warning that should stir us to prayer, to action, and to deeper compassion.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the brethren who donated funds to support the IDPs. Your kindness is a light in a dark season. God bless you and preserve you from every evil in the land. May the Book of Remembrance be opened for you and the members of your family.
God bless you.
