THY BROTHER’S KEEPER

When we arrived at Otobi Akpa, the air was heavy with a sorrow we could almost touch. What we saw in the faces of the people, however, was not despair but the unspoken resilience of a village that has looked death in the face and continues to eke out a living amid suffering.

Recent attacks by the Fulani Militia have ravaged this quiet community. Thirty women now walk the red earth as widows. Dozens of families mourn loved ones who lie buried beneath the ground. Memories are haunted by laughter that will never be heard again. Many of the survivors carry wounds that will stay with them for a lifetime. But every single soul has been traumatised by the brutality of the Fulani attacks.

This grim picture was the reality that the Lay Faithful Trust Foundation stepped into on the 30th of March. Our team hand-delivered food relief to persecuted Christians who have suffered more than any community should. We listened as their pained voices spoke of hunger, threats, and of nights spent awake in fear. One truth has become dreadfully clear: the need is growing faster than the resources we have available.

Yet, the scourge of suffering is not confined to the resilient community of Otobi Akpa alone. While we speak of this village in Benue state, the same pattern of attacks continues in Borno, Adamawa, Plateau, Taraba, and Southern Kaduna. And the misery is spreading. In Kwara, people now flee their homes to save their lives. In Katsina, Kebbi, Zamfara, Niger, and even Yobe, children live in fear, their innocent years shattered by the constant threat of terrorist violence. These states constitute entire regions of Nigeria trapped in a cycle of death, terror, and uncertainty.

Despite all this, perhaps because of it, the Church remains a beacon of hope and comfort. As the Lay Faithful Trust Foundation continues to answer the calls of persecuted Christians, we thank our consistent donors. It is through your compassion that food reaches empty kitchens, that comfort reaches grieving hearts, and the eternal love of Christ is made visible to those who feel perplexed and forgotten.

The people in this report are as real as you and me. They did not choose their circumstances; they committed no crime. They simply lived in places where danger and terror met them. All have had plans and dreams shattered by the senseless violence. What has happened to them could happen to anyone.

We reiterate the appeal for Christians across Nigeria to rise, arm in arm with their persecuted brethren. A contribution of N500 monthly — less than the cost of a meal — can help provide for a family facing untold horrors. When many hands carry the burden, the weight becomes lighter for all.

Please give. Please encourage others to give. It is our covenant responsibility.

“Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them; and them which suffer adversity, as being yourselves also in the body.” Heb. 13:3

God bless you.
